“Whether you think you can, or thing you can’t – you’re probably right.” The words of Henry Ford, who, according to an article I read today, “has a lot to answer for when it comes to the climate-centred woes of our world”. Had Ford not set his manufacturing ideals among us, though, I’m certain another would’ve done. Given a demand that can lead to a profit, market fundamentalism will ensure someone steps into the gap to fill it.
It’s not Ford that is responsible for the aforementioned woes. It’s systems that enable, and even encourage, a short-sighted approach. Individuals in power that fail to shape those systems positively. Customers acting in self-interest, barely acknowledging their role in the problem.
We all have a lot to answer for, looking at the systems we perpetuate.
