On a long hilly run it can feel like you’ve given a lot without having gained much ground. Looking back often sets you straight – you can see how much ground you’ve covered and the obstacles you’ve overcome.
Perhaps you haven’t gotten as far as you’d like. Maybe it was particularly hilly or rough underfoot. An honest appraisal helps get things in perspective.
So, too, with life.
Perhaps you’re not where you want to be, but looking back unashamedly helps you see the ground you’ve covered. The challenges you’ve overcome. You can recognise the strength you needed to reach the here and now.
Or, if you see you were meandering and that’s why you’ve not yet hit your milestones, you can course correct.
You can wallow in the the past and get lost, or take account of your past to see the way more clearly.
