You don’t know what you’re doing

Or perhaps you just don’t know how it’s going to work out, which is not quite the same thing.

When in a holding pattern – between jobs; pushing for major change; expecting results; needing approval – it won’t be clear what’s going to happen next. It might feel like you don’t know what you’re doing, but you’re looking further than you can see and overlooking what you’re doing or can do right now.

Whatever the future holds, there’s an opportunity right now to be doing your best work. To be preparing for what will come. If you want a particular outcome, you have to look for what you can do to influence the process. There’s almost always something that can be done, so do that – with gusto. If you really can’t influence the process, do something to prepare for what happens if you don’t get the outcome you want. Think those things through and you know what you’re doing (or should be doing).

You don’t know what the outcome will be so of course uncertainty remains, but in the face of that you’re doing the best you can. No-one can ask for more and you have a sense of direction.

Move forward.
