Four pillars of a meaningful life

Our culture is obsessed with happiness, but what if there’s a more fulfilling path?

Emily Esfahani Smith – TED talk

I’ve watched a good few talks from the TED world. Sometimes just as I look for wisdom without a specific goal; mostly as I search specifically for a/the/my route to happiness. Emily’s talk really resonated with me when I first saw it last year, and the couple of times I’ve watched it again since. It’s not about pursuing happiness and therein lies its appeal.

During the talk, Emily outlines four pillars that underpin a meaningful life:

  • Belonging
  • Transcendence
  • Purpose
  • Story telling

I’ll look at each of those in four separate posts over the coming week. What struck me about these four pillars is that each can be tackled and reinforced, encouraging action that will improve your foundations and sense of satisfaction in life. That’s more empowering than chasing the illusory concept of happiness.
