When we disagree with people, we can be quick to label them. ‘They’re idiots’ is one of the kinder statements we might use for folks with radically different views. Particularly as we talk with those whose who share our own views, we get tribal and alienate the other. This is natural human behaviour – tribalism has evolutionary roots.
It’s also behaviour we should work at changing. We have so much more in common than appears the case while we’re alienating. To bring about change means persuading or influencing people with different views and this is easier when we’re conscious of common ground. Much easier when we don’t have to think around the labels we’ve attached to people.
Convince yourself that they’re idiots and you’ve half-convinced yourself they can’t change and you’ve no need to change.
