I’ve been using DuckDuckGo as my default search engine for well over a year now and I’m really happy with it. It feels good to be one step further from Google’s corrosive privacy invasion.
When I first looked at DuckDuckGo, I noticed these odd things called !Bang searches. I scoffed at little; how wholly unnecessary! It takes a good engine and large index to persuade me, not a gimmick like !Bang searches, I thought to myself.
The engine and index are plenty good enough (except, perhaps, on images) and the ‘gimmick’ now has me hooked. Very often in writing something for this blog I’ll go look things up – which in itself is one of the pleasures of this writing process – and it almost invariably starts with !wiki. This searches Wikipedia and takes me right to what it considers the best match, without a search results page in the middle. Sounds trivial. I love it.
Two things from this for me. The immediacy with which we can get at free resources is astonishing. Also, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. DuckDuckGo – a privacy focused search engine.
ps. I keep flirting with Ecosia, too; I hope they stay on the path of privacy!
